Undergraduate Employment

Requirements of Undergraduate Positions
  • Must live in on-campus housing
  • Successful completion of background check administered by University Housing
  • Maintain full-time (12 or more credit hours) at Appalachian State University
  • Maintain cumulative & semester grade point average of 2.50 or above
  • Remain in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct
  • Comply with all other University Housing, University, and UNC System policies
Available Undergraduate Positions
Desk Assistant:

Desk Assistants (DAs) provide administrative support to many different areas of University Housing. Specific job descriptions differ depending upon the area of assignment and individual supervisor. DAs may provide support for Coordinators, Assistant Directors, Housing Assignments, Service Desks, and the University Housing front desk area.

Night Assistant:

Night Assistants (NAs) are responsible for working within the residence halls during the hours of 11:30pm - 3:30am. NAs strive to bring community awareness by making rounds of their assigned buildings to ensure that the living environment is safe and conducive to healthy social interaction and academic achievement. NAs work closely with the Resident Assistant on call and Night Assistant Supervisors to serve as the first level of intervention in crisis situations. NAs assist in maintaining the safety and security of the residence halls by reporting student, facility, and safety concerns to the appropriate staff member.

Resident Assistant:

Resident Assistants (RAs) are responsible for a floor or living area within a residence hall at Appalachian. As the front-line University Housing staff member in their assigned area, RAs are responsible for serving as a positive role model, mentor, and guide for approximately 40-60 residents. RAs are responsible for facilitating a cooperative and considerate community environment. To achieve this goal, RAs are expected to initiate relationships with residents, assist in the facilitation of the residential curriculum (Peak), encourage participation in residence hall programs, and inform residents of University and departmental policies. In addition, RAs assist with the personal and academic concerns of students, mediates interpersonal conflicts, and serves as a resource for information.

Additional advertisement can be found on departmental social media outlets and may also be displayed within the residence halls.
