Living Green
The Living Green RLC is for students who are interested in sustainability and who wish to support the sustainable cause by living in an environmentally and socially responsible community. This RLC is sponsored by Sustainability and Energy Management, and students who participate have the opportunity to organize and participate in activities that promote green living on campus and in Watauga County. Students who are interested in learning more about sustainability and green living are invited to apply, regardless of their major. Members of the Living Green RLC learn together in the First Year Seminar, Global Environmental Justice, participate in service and volunteerism, attend Office of Sustainability events, and much more! The Living Green RLC is led by Sustainability & Energy Management and participants will live in Thunder Hill Residence Hall.
Members of Living Green will have the opportunity to:
- Establish a basic level understanding of sustainability and sustainable living
- Understand how to incorporate more sustainable choices into their lives
- Demonstrate knowledge of campus sustainability efforts
- Engage regularly in campus sustainability-related events
- Demonstrate an understanding of the environmental and social consequences of personal consumption decisions
- Partipate in an RLC-specific First Year Seminar, Global Environmental Justice
Examples of activities that Living Green residents have participated in:
- Connect with the Office of Sustainability and participate as a community in the many events offered throughout the year- Campus Sustainability Month, Earth Month, Sustainability Film Series, and so on.
- Service learning trip to the local community garden to learn about sustainable gardening and community composting
- Hike up to the Appalachian State University Wind Turbine for a demonstration and discussion of its effects on sustainability
- Community arts involving the use of recyclable materials
