Living Green

The Living Green community is for students who are interested in sustainability and who wish to support this cause by living in an environmentally and socially responsible community. Students will organize and participate in activities that promote green living on campus and in the surrounding community. Students who are interested in learning more about sustainability and green living are invited to apply, regardless of major.

Members of Living Green will have the opportunity to:
  • Establish a basic level understanding of sustainability and sustainable living
  • Understand how to incorporate more sustainable choices into their lives
  • Demonstrate knowledge of campus sustainability efforts
  • Engage regularly in campus sustainability-related events
  • Develop an understanding of the sustainable aspects of Elkstone Hall
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the environmental and social consequences of personal consumption decisions
Examples of activities that Living Green residents have participated in:
  • Connect with the Office of Sustainability and participate as a community in the many events offered throughout the year- Climate Justice Month, Earth Month, Sustainability Film Series, and so on.
  • Service learning trip to the local community garden to learn about sustainable gardening and community composting
  • Hike up to the Appalachian State University Wind Turbine for a demonstration and discussion of its effects on sustainability
  • Community arts involving the use of recyclable materials
  • Blackout Campout - an opportunity for students to turn everything off in their rooms and camp out instead

Office of Sustainability

The Office of Sustainability (opens in a new tab), along with Appalachian State University as a whole, leads in creating a world where environmental, societal, and economic qualities exist in balance to meet the resource needs of today and of future generations.  Our community of students, faculty and staff continually advance our understanding, capabilities, and practices in this vital journey.
