Fall Move-In Dates & Times
Image
The Appalachian Community looks forward to your arrival for the fall semester! In mid-July, you will receive information from University Housing about your room assignment and move-in. A follow-up email with detailed move-in instructions will be sent by August 1.
Move-In Schedule
First-year and new transfer students: Tuesday, Aug. 11 through Thursday, Aug. 13
Students will select a move-in appointment based on their residence hall assignment.
Continuing students: Friday, Aug. 14 through Sunday, Aug. 16
Students may move in during their selected appointment time.
Invitation-only arrivals: Monday, Aug. 10
Students may arrive at any time during their selected move-in appointment. You will have 30 minutes to unload your belongings from your vehicle. After unloading, vehicles should be moved to satellite parking to allow other students and families to access the unloading areas. You may return to your residence hall to continue unpacking after parking.
Please note: University Housing cannot accommodate requests for early arrival requests.
Move-In Logistics FAQ
How do I schedule my move-in appointment?
New students will choose their move-in appointment immediately after selecting a room in the New Student Application within the University Housing Portal. After selecting an initial move-in appointment, they may edit it in the University Housing Portal through August 1.
Continuing students choose a move-in appointment during Reapplication. Beginning March 16, they may edit their appointment in the University Housing Portal through August 1.
AppolCorp Leaders, SOULs, Marching Mountaineers, Residential Learning Communities, new and continuing Honors students, new and continuing Wataugans, student-athletes, international students, and approved student employees may choose move-in appointments that align with their program's needs.
What happens if I arrive outside of my assigned move-in time?
Staff and resources will be concentrated in the areas where move-in is scheduled each day. If students and families arrive outside their assigned move-in time, staff and volunteers will not be available to assist with move-in, parking, or other needs. We ask that students and families make the necessary arrangements to arrive during their assigned day and time.
Additionally, AppolCorps rosters are based on each student's housing assignment and scheduled move-in date. Students who do not arrive during their assigned move-in appointment may miss their AppolCorps experience. To help manage campus traffic and ensure adequate staffing, students who miss their move-in appointment should plan to arrive after 5 p.m. between August 11 and August 16.
Where do I go when I arrive on campus to move-in?
Families may use this interactive campus map to navigate campus. To do so, open the link and check Fall Move-In under the Locations tab on the left side of the screen. This layer will be live by August 11.
Students assigned to residence halls on the Stadium Side of Campus (Belk, Frank, Laurel Creek, New River, Newland, Raven Rocks, and Thunder Hill) should follow traffic signs directing them to River Street. Students assigned to these halls will be directed up Stadium Drive to check in at the New River Hall parking lot before proceeding to their building.
Students assigned to residence halls on East Campus (Cannon, Cone, Dogwood, Doughton, Elkstone, Summit, and White) should follow traffic signs directing them to Hardin Street. University Police and other university staff will be on site to direct vehicles to the appropriate residence hall.
Students assigned to Appalachian Heights, Living Learning Center, Mountaineer Hall, and Mountain Laurel should drive directly to their residence hall. Detailed directions for these parking areas will be provided at check-in.
Where do I get my AppCard?
All students will get their AppCard mobile credentials during Orientation. If you have questions about your AppCard mobile credentials, please visit the Campus Services Express desk, located on the second floor of the Campus Store. Your AppCard serves as your key to enter your residence hall, and it is also used to pay for your meals on campus. Please note that residence halls will lock after 5 PM on move-in days, so residents will need their mobile credentials to access their building after 5 PM on these days.
Where do I park once I find my move-in area?
The driver of the vehicle will be directed to the appropriate unloading area. Please see the campus parking map for further information. To do so, open the link and check Fall Move-In under the Locations tab on the left side of the screen. You may also view the Move-In Parking page on University Parking's website.
Vehicles on the Stadium Side of Campus may use the River Street Parking Deck or Greenwood Parking Lot. Detailed directions for these parking areas will be provided at check-in. Traffic flow on the Stadium Side of Campus requires vehicles to exit one way after unloading, between Newland and Wey Halls, toward the Schaefer Center.
Vehicles on East Campus may use the Holmes Drive Parking Deck on Holmes Drive. Vehicles will exit the unloading zones via Hardin Street and proceed along Blowing Rock Road (US 321) to the traffic light at Holmes Drive. The Alumni Center will be on the left. Turn right onto Holmes Drive and follow the road around the Holmes Convocation Center into the Holmes Drive Parking Deck.
Vehicles on East Campus may also use the State Farm Parking Lot on Dale Street. Vehicles will exit the unloading zones via Hardin Street and proceed along Blowing Rock Road (US 321) to U.S. Highway 221 North. Turn left onto U.S. Highway 221 North and then right at the traffic light onto State Farm Road. From State Farm Road, turn left onto Dale Street, approximately 0.9 miles ahead.
What will happen at check-in?
You will be required to present a photo ID at check-in. Once you have checked in, you will receive your room key.
Will there be volunteers to help with my move-in?
A limited number of volunteers will be available to assist students and their families during move-in and help direct traffic and unloading zone activity. Because unloading zones are limited to 30-minute drop-offs, drivers are asked to remain with their vehicles during unloading. Once a vehicle has been unloaded, drivers will be directed to satellite parking to remove their vehicle from the main campus.
It is important to label every box, bag, and loose item with the student's name, room number, and residence hall, as you may not be able to carry all of your belongings to your room at once. Please note that University Housing is not liable for any damage to belongings during the move-in process.
Who can be present during Move-In?
There are currently no limits on the number of people who can accompany students during move-in. However, we recommend limiting the number of guests to four, as residence hall rooms have limited space and parking for multiple vehicles is limited.
Will refreshments be provided?
University Housing does not provide water or snacks. We encourage you to bring your own water bottle. Refill stations will be available in some of the residence halls.
Which residence halls have elevators?
All of the residence halls have elevators.
Packing & Preparation
To help ensure your belongings arrive safely and make move-in day go smoothly, please follow these guidelines when packing:
Remember to check the Housing Policies page for prohibited items.
Review our What to Bring page for additional tips. For example, only one microwave oven (must not exceed 1200 watts or 10 amps) and one small refrigerator (must not exceed 1200 watts or 10 amps; 5 cubic feet or less) are permitted per room. To make move-in easier, you may consider renting a MicroFridge® through our third-party supplier, Standards For Living, Inc.
While University Housing is aware of a variety of adhesives designed to affix items to residence hall walls, we encourage students to use push pins on drywall (App Heights, Belk, Frank, Laurel Creek, Mountain Laurel, Mountaineer, New River, Raven Rocks, and Thunder Hill) and adhesive products on cinderblock walls (Cannon, Cone, Dogwood, Doughton, Elkstone, LLC, Newland, Summit, and White). Students are responsible for any excessive damage to paint or walls resulting from the use of these products.
Consider bringing a dolly or handcart to make moving in easier.
Clearly label your belongings with your full name, residence hall, and room number. Include labels on everything and make them easy to see.
Pack everything in a box, suitcase, or storage bin. Loose items are more likely to get lost and create additional trips back and forth. In the event of inclement weather, your belongings will also be better protected.
Remember that, in many cases, you will use stairs rather than elevators to move your belongings.
Communicate with your roommate to avoid bringing duplicate items for your room.
What Happens Between Move-In and the Start of Classes?
All new Mountaineers will participate in App State's Welcome to App Orientation. Welcome to App is a continuation of new student summer orientation and is your one-stop destination for discovering events, programs, and opportunities designed to help you connect with fellow students, engage with campus life, and feel at home in the High Country.
New students living on campus will meet their assigned APPalachian Orientation Leaders (Appol Corps) during their mandatory residence hall meeting on Thursday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. Appol Corps Leaders are upper-class students who serve as guides and valuable resources throughout Welcome to App Orientation.
