Where can I get information about my residence hall/room?
Residence hall rates include electricity, water, and maintenance. Rates take into account the amenities available in each building (e.g., air conditioning, private bathrooms, in-room kitchenettes, etc.). As a result, although two halls may have the same style, their associated rates may vary based upon the amenities available in each individual building. Rooms are furnished with twin beds (80" extra-long mattresses), dressers, desks (may be a combo unit), desk chairs and a closet or wardrobe.
Please visit the Residence Halls section for detailed information about our buildings.
Who has access to my residence hall?
Students have access only to the residence hall in which they live. Exterior doors remain locked 24 hours a day for all residence halls, except Thunder Hill, Raven Rocks, Laurel Creek, and New River, which have open lobbies from 8 AM to 8 PM on weekdays. In these residence halls, residential wings are separated from the open lobbies by locked doors accessible only to residents. For details on the Guest/Visitation policy, please refer to the current version of our Housing Policies.
Who should I contact in case of emergency?
In the event of an emergency, first dial 911 or contact the Appalachian Police Department at 828-262-8000. Incidents within the residence halls should be reported to hall staff (Resident Assistants (RAs) or Residence Director (RD)). RAs are on duty nightly from 5 PM - 8 AM, and hall offices are staffed nightly from 9 PM - 12 AM. Whenever the RA on duty is not found in the hall office, the on-call number will be posted on or near the hall office. Monday through Friday, 8 AM through 5 PM, the on-call number will reroute to full-time professional staff.
When are the residence halls closed?
The residence halls are closed during Winter Break (between fall and spring semesters). During this time, students are required to vacate their rooms, though they may leave their belongings. The residence halls are also closed during Summer Break (between spring and fall semesters). Students are unable to leave or store items during this time, as they must completely vacate their assignment at Spring move-out. Please note that the University is not responsible for any items that are lost, stolen, or damaged when left in your room.
