Perishable Items Policy

The Service Desks will reject perishable items that are cold to the touch or require refrigeration (with the exception of medication). Items marked as perishable will be evaluated and accepted/rejected on a case-by-case basis.

Items marked as perishable that are accepted will be stored for a maximum of 3 business days. On the first business day students who receive a perishable package will receive an email notification at their Appalachian email address alerting them that the package has arrived and outlining the pick-up and return policies of the Service Desks regarding such packages. On the second business day, students will receive a telephone call reminding them of their package and along with a second email notification. On the third business day, unclaimed perishable packages will be returned to sender beginning at 3pm or after.

Package Notifications

Students will receive an email notification at their Appalachian email address whenever they have a package available for pickup at the University Post Office, East Service Desk, or West Service Desk.

Lockouts

Residents who lock themselves out of their rooms now have an additional option available to them. Resident Assistant (RA) staff are available at night from 7:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m. for residents who lock themselves out of their rooms. Residents may also go to the service desk for their particular side of campus during its regular operating hours to check out a temporary key for their room (Appalachian ID required). These temporary keys must be returned by 8:00 a.m. the next business day; otherwise, University Housing will automatically change the lock on the door and charge the student's account for the amount of the lock change.

Inclement Weather Policy

If the university closes due to inclement weather concerns, the Service Desks will also close. During that time, residents who are locked out will need to locate the RA on duty for their building. If the university cancels classes but remains open, the Service Desks will continue to operate as normal and staff will make every attempt to report to work. However, if conditions, especially overnight, prevent our student workers from safely reporting for their shifts then the Service Desks will be closed. Questions or concerns about this policy may be directed to University Housing at (828) 262-2160.
