General Questions

Common Housing Questions For Returning Students

Do I qualify for Housing Reapplication?

Only students who currently live on campus may reapply for housing for the upcoming academic year.  Students must also be enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking student and have paid all applicable charges related to on-campus housing.

Can I bring in an off-campus or transfer student as a roommate?

Returning students may not request off-campus or transfer students as roommates.  Neither off-campus nor transfer students currently live on campus; therefore, they do not qualify to enter the Housing Reapplication process.  Students may only request other students who have entered the Housing Reapplication process as potential roommates.

I'm going to be Resident Assistant (RA) - can I just sign up for an RA room?

Students who have or may become an RA must go through the Housing Reapplication process as normal.  If a potential RA receives an invitation to choose a room they should go ahead and do so - if they are later hired as an RA then their housing assignment and related charges will be adjusted automatically.  Additionally, RA rooms are not available for selection during the Housing Reapplication process.

Can I enter the Housing Reapplication process alone?

Actually, ever student enters the Housing Reapplication process by themselves.  If a student receives an invitation, they will then indicate any roommate preference(s), if any, at the time they select their room.  Invited roommates will then be given the option to either accept or decline the roommate invitation.  Students may also choose to select no specific roommate(s), in which case the remaining space(s) in their chosen room will be available for other students chosen to receive on-campus housing to claim.

What if I choose to accept a space on campus and then decide to move off-campus?

Appalachian State University is incurring an administrative expense to hold a space for a student.  If a returning student cancels their license contract prior to July 1, their student account will be charged $250 to cover administrative costs.  If a returning student cancels on or after July 1 the student is liable for the entire amount of housing charges for the fall semester.  Because the license contract is for an academic year (fall and spring semesters), students who are residents in the fall semester are liable and expected to continue to occupy rooms in the spring semester.

What if I am not selected to receive on-campus housing?

Students who are not selected to receive on-campus housing during the Housing Reapplication process may choose to place themselves on the waiting list beginning March 1.  If necessary, students who place themselves on the Housing Reapplication waiting list may also elect to opt out and no longer be considered for on-campus housing for the coming academic year.  Students are encouraged to promptly remove themselves from the waiting list in the event that they secure off-campus housing.  University Housing staff will notify students on the waiting list as space becomes available.

How can I live in the Living Learning Center (LLC), Appalachian Panhellenic Hall (APH), or Honors housing?

In addition to the general Housing Reapplication requirements, students must also be a member of the Watauga Global Community program to be eligible to reapply for the LLC.  Sorority members interested in reapplying for the APH must first see their floor representative.  Students wishing to return to Honors housing will need to speak with the Honors College office at (828)262-2082.  Students interested in reapplying for any of these buildings must also fill out their online housing application.
