What are Unique Housing Options?
Unique Housing Options include both Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) and Common Interest Housing. RLCs and Common Interest Housing are both comprised of students who share a common interest living together on a floor within a residence hall. Students living in an RLC also take at least 1-2 academic courses together, while those living in Common Interest Housing do not. What is a Resident Assistant (RA)?
Resident Assistants (RAs) are undergraduate students who reside on each floor within the residence halls. RAs are chosen to work with the residents because of their personal qualities and skills. The RA serves in a wide range of duties from friend to role model. Each RA is trained in helping skills, crisis intervention, conflict mediation, and other areas to help residents cope with problems that may arise.
What is a Residence Director (RD)?
A Residence Director (RD) is a graduate student who supervises the Resident Assistants of the residence hall in which they reside. The RD is responsible for a residence hall and provides counseling, support, and supervision of students. RDs help develop community living by emphasizing consideration for others and enforcing university regulations.

What is a Coordinator?
A Coordinator is a full time live-on staff member who supervises 6-10 Resident Assistants and/or often 1-5 Residence Directors in their community. Coordinators are responsible for staff selection, training, and evaluation, fiscal management, programming, administration, and discipline within the building/community. All Coordinators have completed advanced degrees in College Student Development, Counseling, or a closely related field.

What is the Residence Hall Association (RHA)?
The RHA of Appalachian State University is the second largest student organization on campus. It is the student-run governing board of all Hall Councils. RHA is sponsored by the Department of Housing & Residence Life and is funded from residence hall fees. RHA is a network of students comprised of an executive board and one representative from each residence hall who serves as the Hall Council's voice and votes at all RHA meetings. RHA discusses various needs of residential students andi s active in making sure the halls' needs are met. RHA is a way for students to meet leaders from other areas of campus while becoming actively involved in the campus residential community. Students will also develop leadership skills, communicate ideas from the Hall Council level, plan campus-wide activities, and serve as an advisory council regarding policy issues affecting campus residents. What is a Hall Council?
A Hall Council is comprised of all students who live in a residence hall. Student representatives to Hall Council plan events, enhance residence hall living, and learn about current issues on campus. Hall Councils design activities that are fun and promote community fellowship among the students. There is one Hall Council for each residence hall and a number of leadership positions within each Hall Council.
What are counseling,police, and academic advisor liaisons?
Specific counseling, police, and academic advisor staff members are designated to each community in order to provide more intentional service on a smaller scale. Staff members designated as liaisons for the current academic year are:
