Facilities - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Students in residence hall room

Where will I do my laundry?

Halls with centralized laundry rooms are equipped with card readers that allow students to pay for laundry using their Appalachian Express account.  Please be aware that students must deposit money in their Appalachian Express account to be able to pay for laundry in this manner.  Laundry machines in residence halls without a centralized laundry room are coin operated.

What do I do with my trash?

Dumpsters are located outside of each residence hall for students to dispose of their trash.  Personal trash should not be disposed of in common bathroom, lobby, or kitchen area trash receptacles.  Students will be documented for failure to dispose of trash appropriately.

What size sheets do I need to buy?

Mattress sizes vary depending upon the residence hall that students are assigned.  It is advisable for students to wait until they receive their housing assignment before obtaining sheets.  Once students receive their housing assignment they may refer to the residence hall information page to see what size sheets are needed.  Instructions for requesting extra-long mattresses will be included on the applicable residence hall pages.

Who is responsible for cleaning my room?

Housekeeping staff are responsible for keeping all public areas of the residence halls clean.  This includes hallways, lobby areas, and common baths.  Students are responsible for keeping their rooms clean; however, in the event that a repair is needed for any residence hall furnishings or equipment within the room, students should place an online maintenance request at the Housing & Residence Life website.

What if I have a maintenance concern regarding my room?

Students should not attempt to make their own repairs to any residence hall furnishings or equipment.  If a repair is needed students may place an online maintenance request at the Housing & Residence Life website.  The Department of Housing & Residence Life is responsible for determining completion dates, costs, and necessity of any repairs.  For assistance with computers, peripherals, and the ResNet student network, students should call (828)262-8324.

What is ResNet?

ResNet (Residential Network) provides network connections to students living on campus. All network connections in the residence halls are Ethernet except Justice and Winkler Hall. Both of these halls have DSL. This service allows residents to connect to the campus network or Internet via the Appalachian Network. ResNet works closely with Technology Support Services, Network Support Services, Housing & Residence Life, and Physical Plant Telecommunications to support students living in the residence halls.

Is cable television provided in the residence halls?

All residence hall rooms are equipped with basic cable television service.  The charge is built into the semester housing rate, so no additional payment is needed.  Premium and/or additional channels are not available.

Do I need to bring a telephone?  What about long distance calls?

Beginning May 15, 2009, telephone service will no longer be provided in residence hall rooms (with the exception of Mountaineer Apartments).  Students wishing to use the telephone line in the room will need to contact the Department of Housing & Residence Life to have the line reactivated.  Students will be billed for the cost of reactivation.

What about internet access or computer problems?

Each residence hall room has one ethernet port per bed for internet connections.  Justice and Winkler halls do not have ethernet access; both offer DSL connectivity instead.   In addition to standard ethernet/DSL connectivity, several of the residence halls also offer wireless internet access as well.  Please see the residence hall information page for more information regarding wireless connectivity in each building.  Students who are experiencing computer problems may call (828)262-8324 for assistance.

Are my personal belongings insured?

Appalachian State University is not responsible for any personal belongings in the residence halls or around campus.  Students are encouraged to consider renter's insurance if they plan on bringing expensive personal items.

May I bring my own furniture?

Desks, desk chairs, and beds are provided for student use in every residence hall room.  Any room furnishing added by a student must be free-standing - students may not attach furnishings to walls, floors, etc.  No item may be located so as to obstruct direct access to the door or windows.  No university furniture may be removed from the room - students will be charged for any university furniture that is missing at the time of checkout.

What amenities does my residence hall offer?

Detailed information on the amenities (i.e., air conditioning) offered in each residence hall may be found on the residence hall information page.  Other information available includes room dimensions, underbed storage space, and kitchen facilities.  Bunking beds, stacking movable bookshelves, and storing items under a bed are all good ideas to consider when trying to use the existing room space most efficiently.  No bed lofts are permitted in the residence halls.

Do you rent refrigerators or microwaves?

Yes, the Department of Housing & Residence Life offers the MicroFridge® Rental Program.
