THE ON-CAMPUS ADVANTAGE

Students who live on-campus have an advantage over students who live off-campus. Before you make a decision on whether or not to move off-campus make sure you have fully considered the advantages to living on-campus.No other living experience for college students in Boone offers the same full scope of benefits as Appalachian Housing & Residence Life. Below you will find the top 12 reasons students state for staying on-campus.

Top Reasons for Living On-Campus:

  1. Academic Maturity:  Students who live on campus score higher on writing tests, academic autonomy, and interdependence than students who live off-campus. Students on-campus work collaboratively with their peers and develop increased motivation for academic success.
  2. Students on campusConvenience: Living on-campus puts students within walking distance of all their classes, the library, all the gyms, great food, downtown Boone, the Boone bus system (Appalcart), and many friends. Hours in transportation and lots of gas money are saved every week by living on campus!
  3. Exciting Events and Activities: If students want to get involved in college life outside of classes there is no better place to be than the residence halls. Besides the fact that everything on-campus is within a 10 minute walk, there are hundreds of social and educational opportunities that occur in the residence halls every semester.
  4. Friendship: When students are asked what they remember most about living in the residence halls they almost always mention the close friendships they formed that are still in place after college. Since most residence halls have around 300 students there is a great diversity of students to meet and find friends with the same or different interests. Each residence hall includes lounges for students to socialize and common area TVs for students to watch together.
  5. Higher Grades: Students who live on-campus have higher grades in both their first and second years in college! They also have greater access to the library, study space, the writing center, and friends to help them study.
  6. Involvement: Students living on-campus are more involved in all the activities and organizations college offers. Students on-campus take greater advantage of their tuition dollars by attending more events, joining more clubs and organizations, and getting involved in athletics, arts, education, and entertainment.
  7. One Payment: Living off-campus usually results in a multitude of bills students on-campus never need to worry about. Students off-campus should be prepared to have someone pay monthly bills for rent, cable TV, electric or fuel oil, water and sewer, phone service, internet access, and maybe even trash pick-up. In the residence halls all the services are wrapped up in one payment, once a semester.
  8. Retention: Students who live on-campus actually stay in college longer. By becoming more involved and being close to the center of campus, students living on campus are 13% more likely to stay in college than students living off-campus.
  9. Safety: Residence hall main doors are controlled by a keycard access system in which only students living in the residence hall can access the building.  Every night there is an RA on duty from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.  All RAs are trained in noticing and responding to security risks (i.e. propped exterior doors).  In addition, the main desks of most residence halls are staffed every night from 10:30 p.m. to 4 a.m by a Night Star staff member (A.S.U. Police are also minutes away) who walks through the residence hall on a regular basis.  Night Star staff are assigned to work specifically with certain residence halls.  Students on campus
  10. Service: All the residence halls are well-maintained with quality service.  Two housekeepers work within each residence hall and a large maintenance staff is ready to fix any problems as quickly as possible.  Students off-campus need to be prepared to distribute duties for bathroom cleaning, vacuuming, and sweeping.  In addition, all the residence halls offer laundry and vending service so students never have to leave the comfort of their building to clean their clothes or grab a snack.  Most laundry and vending services accept ASU ID cards so no quarters or dollars are necessary.  Computer labs on each side of campus also provide access to additional hardware, peripherals, and licensed software that students may not already own.
  11. Support: Every residence hall has 5-10 staff trained to help students succeed in class and get involved outside of class.  Graduate-level Residence Directors (RDs) and undergraduate Resident Assistants (RAs) provide students with many helpful resources and connect them with the right faculty and staff to help them succeed.  Both RDs and RAs go through 10 days of training to assist them in peer counseling, crisis response, community development, and academic support.
  12. Tradition: Memories will be formed while living in a residence hall that will be fondly retold for years to come.  Everyone who lives in a residence hall can tell stories about valuable late night discussions, funny things people did, and the bond formed by everyone in that building.
