Fall Move-In

Move-In Dates & Times

The Appalachian Community looks forward to your arrival for the Fall semester! In mid-July, you will receive information from University Housing about your room assignment and move-in.

Fall Move-In is planned for Tuesday, August 13, through Thursday, August 15. Most new, incoming first year and transfer students will choose a move-in appointment time based on their residence hall assignment. Please note that University Housing is unable to accommodate requests for early arrivals.

New incoming first years and transfer students may arrive any time during their chosen move-in appointment. Please note that all students will only have 30 minutes to unload their belongings from their vehicles. After 30 minutes, students and/or families are expected to move their vehicles to satellite parking so others can pull up to the hall to unload. They may return to the building to continue unpacking their rooms.

Continuing students will not choose a move-in appointment time, as they are permitted to return any time from Friday, August 16 to Sunday, August 18.

New, incoming students will choose their move-in appointment immediately following their room selection in the New Student Application on the University Housing Portal. After they choose their initial move-in appointment, they can edit their appointment as needed in the New Student Application through July 21.

Continuing students will not choose a move-in appointment time, as they are permitted to return any time from Friday, August 16 to Sunday, August 18.

AppolCorp Leaders, SOULs, ROTC, Marching Mountaineer, Residential Learning Communities, New and Continuing Honors, Wataugans, Athletes, International Students, and approved Student Employees will be assigned specific move-in appoitments that align with the needs of their program. These students will receive confirmation of their move-in appointment in mid-summer.

Staff and resources will be concentrated to areas where move-in is scheduled each day. If students and families arrive outside of their assigned move-in time, there will not be staff or volunteers on hand to help them move in, find parking, or generally assist with any other needs. Therefore, we ask that students and families please make the necessary arrangements to move in during their assigned day and time.

Additionally, rosters for AppolCorps will be assembled after July 21 and will be based on each student's housing assignment and move-in date. Therefore, students who do not arrive during their scheduled move-in appointment will risk missing their AppolCorps experience. For this reason, as well as managing traffic on campus, students who miss their move-in appointments should plan to arrive any time from August 16 - 18.

When families arrive for move-in, there are a multitude of highly visible yellow/black signs posted along the roadways. The signs come in two varieties, one being for WEST CAMPUS and the other for EAST CAMPUS. Families may also use this interactive campus map (opens in a new tab) to navigate campus. To do so, open the link and check Fall Move-In, which is located under the Locations tab on the left side of the screen. This map will be live by August 13.

Residence halls on the WEST CAMPUS are: Appalachian Heights, Belk, Frank, Laurel Creek, Living Learning Center (LLC), Mountaineer, New River, Newland, Raven Rocks, and Thunder Hill. The WEST CAMPUS signs provide directions to Rivers Street. From there, additional signs are in place to divide traffic appropriately. Specifically:

  • Appalachian Heights/Mountaineer/LLC traffic continues to Bodenheimer Drive and continues to that building.
  • Belk/Frank/Laurel Creek/New River/Newland/Raven Rocks/Thunder Hill traffic is turned onto Stadium Drive and checks in at the New River Hall parking lot before being directed to that building.

Residence Halls on the EAST CAMPUS are: Cannon, Cone, Dogwood, Doughton, Elkstone, Mountain Laurel, Summit, Sleep Inn, and White. The EAST CAMPUS signs provide directions to Hardin Street. From there, additional signs are in place to divide traffic appropriately. Specifically:

  • Mountain Laurel Hall should drive directly to that building.
  • Sleep Inn should drive directly to that building.
  • Cone/Elkstone/White Hall traffic is turned onto Locust Street.
  • Cannon/Dogwood/Doughton Hall traffic is directed to the Legends parking lot.

All students will get their AppCard during Orientation. If you are attending a late Orientation, you may get your AppCard from the AppCard Office, located on the second floor of the University Bookstore, after you check into your residence hall. Your AppCard serves as your key to enter your residence hall and it is also what you use to pay for your meals on campus. Please note, residence halls will lock after 5 PM during move-in days so residents will need their AppCard to access their building after 5 PM on these days.

After Aug. 15, visit the Campus Services Express desk (opens in a new tab), located on the second floor of the University Bookstore during regular business hours with all AppCard questions.

The driver of the vehicle will be directed to the appropriate area for unloading. Please see the campus parking map (opens in a new tab)for further information. To do so, open the link and check Fall Move-In, which is located under the Locations tab on the left side of the screen.

Construction on the STADIUM SIDE OF CAMPUS requires vehicles to exit (after unloading) at the Schaffer Center parking lot. More detailed parking information will be provided for you at check in.

Vehicles on EAST CAMPUS may use the State Farm parking lot, which is located at Dale Street. For this lot, vehicles will exit unloading zones using Hardin Street and proceed straight down Blowing Rock Road (US Route 321) to U.S. 221 North Highway. Turn left at U.S. 221 North Highway and turn right at the light onto State Farm Road. From State Farm Road, turn left onto Dale Steet, which is approximately 0.9 miles down State Farm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen at check-in?

You will be required to present your photo ID when you check in. Once checked in, you will receive your room key.

Will there be volunteers to help with my move-in?

A limited number of volunteers will be on hand to assist students and their families during move-in and to navigate traffic and unloading zones. Since unloading zones are only for 30-minute drop off, visiting drivers are asked to stay with their vehicle during the drop-off process. Once a vehicle has been emptied, drivers are directed to satellite parking to remove the car from the main campus.

It is important to label EVERY box, bag, and loose item with the student's name, room number, and residence hall as you may not be carrying everything that belongs to you to your room. Please note that University Housing is not liable for any damage to belongings during the move-in process. 

Who can be present during Move-In?

There are currently no limits on the number of people who can accompany students for move-In. However, we recommend limiting the number to four guests as there is limited space in the residence hall rooms and limited parking for multiple vehicles.

Will refreshments be provided?

University Housing does not provide water and snacks. We encourage you to bring your own water bottle. Refill stations will be available in some of the residence halls.

Which residence halls have elevators?

All of the residence halls have elevators.

How should I pack my things?

In order to be certain that your belongings make it to your room, please follow these guidelines when packing:

  • Remember to check the Housing Policies page for prohibited items.
    • Look at our What to Bring page for additional tips! For example, did you know only one microwave oven (must not exceed 1200 watts or 10 amps) and one small refrigerator (must not exceed 1200 watts or 10 amps; 5 cubic feet or less) are permitted per room? To make move-in easier, you may consider renting a MicroFridge® through our third-party supplier, Standards For Living, Inc. 
    • While University Housing is aware of a great variety of adhesives designed to affix items to the walls of your residence hall room, we encourage students to use push pins on drywall (Laurel Creek, Mountain Laurel, Mountaineer, New River, Sleep Inn, Raven Rocks, and Thunder Hill) and adhesive to cinderblock walls (App Heights, Belk, Cannon, Cone, Dogwood, Doughton, Elkstone, Frank, LLC, Newland, Summit, and White). Please be aware that you are responsible for any excessive damage to the paint and/or wall that results from the use of such products.
  • Consider bringing a dolly or handcart to make moving in easier.
  • Clearly label your belongings with your full name, residence hall, and room number. Include labels on everything and make them easily visible.
  • Pack everything in a box, suitcase, or storage bin. Loose items are more likely to get lost and create more trips back and forth. In addition, in the event of inclement weather your belongings will be much safer in a box than on their own!
  • Remember that, in a lot of cases, you will be using stairs and not elevators to move your belongings.
  • Communicate! Make sure that you have talked with your roommate and made an effort to avoid duplicating items for your room.
  • Be informed! Make sure that you review the list of approved/prohibited items and know what is and is not allowed in your room. Again, this will save time and effort for everyone!
What will first-year students do between moving in and the start of classes?

All first-year students will participate in Welcome to App! with their assigned AppolCorps Leader after their assigned move-in times. Welcome to App! is a continuation of new student orientation and all first-year students are expected to attend.

You will receive an email at your @appstate.edu email account with details on when and where to meet your AppolCorps Leader.

During Welcome to App! you will create connections with peers, find useful resources, and develop the capacity to succeed at Appalachian State. You will also receive a copy of the common reading book, and advising planner, and your "A" first-year lapel pin. For more details, visit the Welcome to App!
