Business for Good

The Business For Good (B4G) Community is a two-year program to support first-generation transfer students pursuing a major in business. A first-generation transfer student is an individual whose parents did not complete a college degree and is transferring from a community college or another institution. Students must have completed at least forty credit hours to be eligible for the program.

The B4G Community aims to create a sustainable, equitable, and diverse environment to aid first-generation students in their transition to Appalachian and find success in the Walker College of Business and beyond. The community also focuses on exploring how business (and business professionals) can address economic, environmental, and social problems. During the first year in the B4G Community, students have the option to select AppState housing and live with other members of the B4G residential learning community (RLC). The B4G RLC has 20 dedicated spots in transfer student housing for B4G students' initial year on campus.

Programming is targeted to the unique challenges facing first-gen students and may include:

  • professionalism workshops
  • networking dinners
  • career coaching
  • financial literacy workshops
  • student and faculty mentorships

Further, students in good standing can apply for scholarship travel funding to engage in job shadowing and cultural experiences organized specifically for B4G students. Trips planned for the first year may include Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville, and/or New York City. Second-year students can apply for scholarship funding for a unique B4G study abroad program.

Members of the BFG community will enjoy programming that aims to equip first-gen students with the benefits and opportunities to make their time at Appalachian more successful and prepare them for future career success.

If you are a future first-gen transfer student majoring in business, apply to be part of the B4G Community and join us in working to make this world a better place.
