Faculty-In-Residence Program

University Housing created the Faculty-In-Residence (FIR) program to provide students an opportunity to interact with faculty members outside of the classroom, as well as encourage faculty to share their academic and personal interests with on-campus residents. The program seeks to facilitate and encourage learning experiences outside of the classroom while enabling students to see faculty members beyond the classroom role.

The program fosters interaction of faculty with students in the residence halls, creating an environment that is conducive to formal, academic, and casual conversations and programs. Faculty members in the FIR program gain a more in-depth understanding of the college experience for on-campus residents, which in turn provides a new perspective on learning within the classroom environment.

The general goals of the FIR program are:

  • To have regular involvement in student life by providing spontaneous and planned opportunities for social interaction throughout the residence hall
  • To initiate educational activities that foster faculty/student relations
  • To collaborate with residence hall staff and academic programs to maximize faculty/student interaction
  • To maintain good visibility within the residence hall to encourage informal contact with students
  • To have the availability to advise, support, and/or refer students to appropriate resources
