Business for Good

Join us in 2022-23 for the inaugural year of the Business for Good Residential Learning Community (RLC), where the mission is to equip, prepare, and empower first-generation students to use business to build a better world. This RLC is open to both new and transfer students who are first-generation, meaning any student who comes from a family where neither parent holds a four-year degree. In addition, priority consideration will be given to underrepresented and minority students.

The Business for Good RLC aims to create a sustainable, equitable, and diverse space for intended business majors to focus on exploring how business can address economic, environmental, and social problems. While non-profit organizations and governments have a role, they often don't have the resources, the scope, or the ability to act quickly to address issues of social justice and sustainability. The Business for Good RLC will investigate how to use business to create positive change and help further address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (opens in a new tab).

The Business for Good RLC wants all first-generation students to know that they matter, their voice matters, and their experience at Appalachian matters. We invite you to apply to be part of the first cohort of Business for Good. Together, we can make the world a better place.

Members of Business for Good will have the opportunity to:
  • Receive mentoring to integrate a smooth transition into college life
  • Participate in RLC social activities tailored to this inaugural cohort's wants and needs
  • Access RLC career-building workshops and networking events
  • Integrate early into student clubs within the Walker College of Business
  • Live in Newland Hall among a community of peers
  • Be considered for a $1,000 renewable scholarship

Apply to join the Business for Good RLC to create lifelong friendships and make a positive impact on your community. Log into the University Housing Portal (opens in a new tab), start your housing application, and then click on the RLC application link. For full consideration, be sure to answer all the application questions and submit your application early.
