Blazing the Mountain Trail

Over 30% of undergraduate students at Appalachian State University are First Generation college students, meaning they come from families where neither parent holds a four-year college degree. The Blazing the Mountain Trail residential learning community offers an opportunity to meet other First Generation students, interact with First Generation faculty and staff, explore the strengths and challenges each of us (as humans and members of many different communities) possess, discover the many resources that AppState has to support students, and take those first steps down your personal path to success in college and in life.

By participating in the Blazing the Mountain Trail community:
  • Students will develop community and connections to Appalachian State University faculty, staff, and peers
  • Students will utilize on- and off-campus resources to aid in their acclimation to campus
  • Students will gain skills and explore the "hidden curriculum" that allows them to successfully navigate the University and advocate for themselves
  • Students will discover strength and value in their experience as a First Generation student
