Housing FAQs

How long does the Residence Hall License Contract last?

Group projectThe Residence Hall License Contract is for both semesters of the academic year. Cancellation of the Residence Hall License Contract after occupancy is scheduled to begin, except for students officially withdrawing from the university, will result in the continuation of the full housing charge. The university refund schedule (please refer to the applicable General Bulletin) will apply for official withdrawals.

Am I required to have a meal plan?

Every student living on-campus is required to purchase a meal plan, with the exception of those students living in Appalachian Heights. The Low option is available to all students except first-year freshmen. Students who do not choose a meal plan when filling out their housing application will be charged for the Standard meal plan (except for those in Appalachian Heights). For further information regarding meal plans and pricing, please contact ASU Food Services.

When will I receive my housing assignment?

Assignment information and check-in details for Fall semester are mailed during the month of July, while those for Spring semester are mailed during December. Additionally, students are able to check their housing assignment information online via the Housing Management System (HMS). The time frame for checking assignments online will be listed in the checklist that each student sees upon logging into the HMS system.

How do I request a roommate?

New incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to request a roommate while filling out their initial housing application. Returning students may request a roommate when they reapply for housing during the Housing Reapplication period in February. Students who do not indicate a roommate preference will be matched by the Housing Managment System using the information provided on their housing applications. *All requests are based upon space availability.

What are temporary room assignments?

Increased demand for on-campus housing sometimes requires that students be temporarily over-assigned to residence halls. For detailed information about departmental policy regarding over-assignment, please refer to the current version of the Residence Hall License Contract booklet.

What if I want to change rooms?

Room changes are not permitted during the first two weeks of both Fall and Spring semesters. The Department of Housing & Residence Life uses this time to identify open spaces and stabilize occupancy records. Students completing unauthorized room changes will be required to return to their originally assigned space, may be denied the opportunity to participate in any other room changes for the academic year, and will be assessed a $25 administrative charge. Once the room change period begins, students wanting to move need to contact the Residence Director (RD) of their building to fill out the appropriate paperwork and receive instruction regarding how to complete the room change process.

How do I protect my personal property while on-campus?

Some suggestions for the protection of personal property are:

  • Always lock your doors, even if you are just going down the hall - keep your keys with you at all times.
  • Take stock of your personal property while at school. Make a list of valuables with dollar amounts and serial numbers to provide yourself with documentation of ownership should anything be lost or stolen and later recovered.
  • Leave expensive jewelry at home or store it in an in-room electronic safe. All small valuables should be kept in a safe when not in use.
  • Engrave your initials and/or the last for digits of your Social Security Number on your laptop computer, desktop computer, or other electronic devices.
  • Do not leave belongings unattended.
  • Many items are covered either in full or in part by parents' homeowners insurance. If you move off-campus this may not apply, so be sure to check your policy. If you are not covered, you may wish to apply for student personal property insurance.
  • Be alert - prevent theft before it occurs.
